The permutations ahead of the meeting were endless but in simple terms, Coventry had to defeat the runaway Elite League leaders and also hope that top-four rivals Lakeside lost at Swindon on the same night.
It had been an unbelievable run towards the top four as the Bees had started the season with seven successive defeats, and sat second from bottom in the table as recently as early August.
But they had dramatically come into contention with a run of seven wins in eight, along with some unexpected results involving other play-off contenders.
When Bees won a dramatic last-heat decider at Peterborough and then collected all four league points on a wet night at Belle Vue, the door to the play-offs was suddenly ajar.
But standing in their way was a power-packed Poole side who were 17 points clear at the top of the table, and who at that stage had a total of 78 points compared to the Bees' 46.
The Pirates were led by star trio Chris Holder, Bjarne Pedersen and Davey Watt, they had up-and-coming World U21 Champion Darcy Ward, and their reserves were Leon Madsen and Jason Doyle!
It was their opportunity to put the rapidly growing threat of Coventry out of the play-offs before they even started.
But it was quite simply win or bust for the Buildbase Bees on what we dubbed 'Countdown Thursday' with riders, management and supporters coming together to create an incredible atmosphere.
It was a tense, high-octane evening - and you can re-live it all here.
