SAVE Coventry Speedway & Stox Campaign Group have now submitted our Local Plan representations to Rugby Borough Council.
These representations have been made on behalf of ourselves and the Consortium seeking to take over the iconic Brandon Stadium and restore it for its rightful motorsports use.
At the request of RBC, and in line with guidance from the Inspectorate, we have collected responses from those in favour of Policy W1B and included names, addresses and a selection of comments.
The response has once again been truly incredible, with our own document including over 1,700 names, a significant increase on the previous consultation last year. This does not take into account further responses which were sent directly to RBC.
We have read each and every one of the e-mails, the majority of which are sent straight from the heart and express the incredible emotion and genuine fondness people have for Brandon, and the sense of loss they still feel nearly a decade on from its forced closure.
Responses have come locally from residents in Speedway Lane and Rugby Road, those in Brandon and Binley Woods, from right across the CV postcode region, surrounding areas, every part of the UK, and from 12 different countries in all – and even from the Commander of a nuclear submarine!
They have quite literally come from every part of the UK, four corners of the world and the depths of the ocean!
To everyone who submitted a response – THANK YOU once again, it is very much appreciated.
The next step in the Local Plan process is that it is expected to be submitted to the Secretary of State by the end of April, with a Public Hearing to follow in the autumn.
It is important to stress that whilst the Local Plan is another vital step towards securing protection on Brandon for motorsports, this does not mean we are unable to continue with our efforts until after the Public Hearing has taken place.
We can confirm that the Consortium have recently made an offer for Brandon Stadium, and are awaiting a response from Brandon Estates.
This offer was submitted by global real estate advisors Avison Young on behalf of the Consortium, during February 2026.
This completely rebuts evidence presented before and during last week’s planning committee hearing regarding Swindon’s Abbey Stadium, where it was stated by agents DPP Planning that since the dismissal of the Brandon appeal two years ago, “no interested parties have come forward with an offer to purchase the site.”
We would also like to warmly congratulate our friends at Swindon Needs Speedway after the unanimous refusal of those planning applications at the Abbey.
The scheme submitted by DPP – who are also planning agents for Brandon Estates – sought to replace the historic venue with housing and associated facilities such as padel courts and cricket nets.
But it was thrown out due mainly to the ‘irrevocable’ loss of a stadium that the plans would entail, with clear parallels to be drawn with the Brandon case where the displacement of the established motorsports uses by housing and a 3G football pitch was correctly deemed to be unacceptable.
It is very pleasing to note that as with Coventry, development has been resisted where no provision has been made for the future of the sport(s) which would be displaced.
*OUR representations included a selection of comments made by respondents, but in addition we included an AI-generated summary.
